EXCITING OPENING WEEKEND FOR ASESSIPPI
Minus 25 could not keep anxious skiers and boarders off the slopes as Asessippi opened its doors to its ninth season last weekend.

It was easy to spot lots of happy winter enthusiasts as the slopes of Asessippi Ski Area & Resort began to fill with skiers and snowboarders.  Operations officially began at 9 am, Friday morning with the grand opening of the new Asessippi Cottage Cove development beginning at 4 pm.

"It was really nice to see some of the first cottage owners able to move into their vacation homes the same day the resort opened," said Daymon Guillas, director Asessippi Resort.

Currently 12 of the 32 cottages sold are under construction.  The cottage development is offering a total of 138 sites with an option of 12 different cabin styles.

"Keeping the cost down and the quality a priority, the Asessippi Cottage Cove has proven to be a very affordable way for families to own a year round vacation property," said Guillas.

Currently the majority of owners have been drawn to Manitoba's premier winter destination from either Manitoba or Saskatchewan, some of them avid skiers or snowboards while others are new to the sport but recognize the enormous growth potential.

"I remember back in about 1992, these guys came to me and said we wanted to build a ski hill, well I thought they were a little crazy then and now to look around, look at the expansions and new cottage development, who could have believed it," said Alvin Zimmer, Reeve of the RM of Shellmouth Boulton and chairperson of S.A.V.E.D. (Shellmouth, Assiniboine Valley, Economic Development).

This is Asessippi's ninth season of operations with visits opening weekend estimated at 1400, it was the busiest opening weekend to date.  The resort now offers 25 downhill runs serviced with 3 chair lifts, one snow carpet and 3 surface tows.  100% snow making continues now with two pump houses to manage the expanded terrain.  The village area continues to be well maintained from year to year putting that "little piece of the mountains, not too far away" feeling right here at home.
